The story behind Kia.

A South Korean vehicle brand with U.S. cars, SUVs, a family MPV and battery-electric models.

From everyday mobility to passenger cars

Kia began in 1944 as a precision manufacturing business and developed bicycles before moving into powered transport. Three-wheeled vehicles and the Brisa passenger car marked successive steps into automobile production. These origins explain why Kia’s current mobility language reaches beyond cars: the company began by meeting practical transport needs with several different kinds of products.

A global retail identity

As Kia expanded internationally, its branding became more consistent. The 1994 oval identity was part of that transition, communicating an ambition to compete on a global stage. The company’s passenger-car and SUV range broadened over time, while the later U.S. manufacturing operation gave the American business a local production base as well as imported vehicles.

A new mark for the electric and utility era

Kia’s connected 2021 wordmark accompanied the move from Kia Motors to a wider mobility identity. Its current U.S. catalog spans K4 and K5 cars, several SUV families and Carnival, alongside EV6, EV9 and newer electric products. Hybrids and plug-in variants are treated as powertrain choices within their model families, keeping the lineup understandable without duplicating every trim.
