The story behind Hyundai.

A South Korean manufacturer whose U.S. range includes sedans, SUVs, hybrid vehicles and IONIQ electric models.

Building a Korean automobile industry

Hyundai Motor was founded in 1967 amid Korea’s industrial development. Early licensed production was followed by the Pony program, which gave the company a home-grown model and an export identity. The 1974 Pony Coupe concept and 1975 Pony presentation remain important reference points in Hyundai’s own heritage work, rather than just nostalgic styling exercises.

The U.S. business grows beyond its first small car

The Excel entered the United States in 1986. Hyundai subsequently broadened its range from economical cars into sedans and SUVs, including Sonata and Santa Fe. Its global growth included new research operations and manufacturing capacity. The company’s heritage connects this expansion to a continued effort to develop its own vehicles, technology and design capability.

A dedicated electric range and a performance branch

The U.S. range now combines established Elantra, Sonata and Tucson families with larger utilities and the Santa Cruz pickup. IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 represent the dedicated electric direction, while N derivatives bring performance engineering into both combustion and electric products. Hybrid and plug-in variants extend the same families without making each drivetrain a separate nameplate.
