The story behind Buick.

General Motors’ Buick brand offers a U.S. range centered on SUVs and crossovers, including Envista, Encore GX, Envision and Enclave.

The foundation of General Motors

Buick predates General Motors. William Durant used the growing Buick operation as the foundation for GM in 1908, linking the brand to the formation of a larger automotive group. Its history therefore belongs both to an individual vehicle maker and to the development of a multi-brand manufacturing business.

A shield becomes a family of shields

Buick’s badge moved from script lettering to a shield inspired by David Dunbar Buick’s family crest. The three-shield version accompanied the Electra, Invicta and LeSabre era. The later Hawk identity illustrates that Buick did not follow one uninterrupted emblem sequence; the tri-shield also remained in use.

Four SUVs and a new design language

Today’s U.S. family lineup consists of Envista, Encore GX, Envision and Enclave. The 2022 emblem redesign placed the shields horizontally and removed their surrounding circle. Buick connects that identity to a broader design direction, carried into production vehicles and its Exceptional by design positioning.
