The story behind BMW.

A German premium brand combining sedans, sports cars, SUVs and electric vehicles with M-branded performance models.

Aviation roots, then road vehicles

BMW traces its founding date to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in 1916. The BMW name and blue-and-white emblem followed in 1917. Motorcycle production began with the R32 in 1923, and the acquisition of Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach in 1928 brought automobile manufacturing into the business.

Wartime responsibility and postwar independence

Under National Socialist rule BMW became an armaments manufacturer and used forced labor, including concentration-camp prisoners. Postwar reconstruction was difficult. The 1959 decision to remain independent and the Neue Klasse cars later established the modern business; the 1973 headquarters and museum made Munich a visible center.

The roundel and electric transition

The roundel retains Bavaria’s blue-and-white colors; the propeller interpretation came through later advertising. The 2020 communication symbol uses a transparent outer area, rather than simply replacing every vehicle badge. BMW’s current U.S. range spans numbered cars, X SUVs, M derivatives and electric i models.
