Swedish origins and practical cars
The first Volvo, the ÖV4, left the Gothenburg factory in April 1927. The PV444 announced in 1944 expanded the company’s ambitions beyond a small domestic producer. The 1953 Duett joined work and leisure in one vehicle, beginning the long association between Volvo and estate cars.

Nils Bohlin’s three-point safety belt arrived in 1959 and became a defining contribution to occupant protection. Volvo’s heritage also includes the P1800, long-lived family vehicles and the XC90. The second-generation XC90 began a new design and technology chapter rather than merely enlarging the old car.

The circle and arrow refer to iron and Sweden’s steel tradition. Volvo’s earliest grille combined a badge with a diagonal support, which became a design signature. Metallic and blue treatments evolved into today’s simpler black mark, while the U.S. range blends mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric SUVs.
